Nooly was the product of abused neglect childhood and broken marriage. Her mother left the family home in Sungailiat, on the island of Bangka and set up a new life in Singapore. Nooly was left behind with her father and her paternal grandmother Apho Nyook who treated her cruelly.
Ten years later when her father died, her mother came back and brought Nooly to Singapore to live with her and her new husband. She was given a new life and a new beginning. But she deeply resented her mother for abandoning her, the pain and humiliation of an unwanted childhood remained within her mind. There was a void within that made her constantly seeking others to make her life complete.
Nooly grew up to be a great beauty with many admirers; one of them was William Khoo a young lawyer who was serious about her.
In the meantime, Tony Foo the son of a wealthy parit thew tin mining supervisor in Sungailiat Bangka appeared in the well to do social circle in Singapore. In the mid-60s during the anti-Chinese racial policy of the Indonesian government, Tony together with tens of thousands of Chinese educated students went to China to further his study.
He entered the prestigious Fudan University in Shanghai, and soon caught up in the traumatic anarchic Cultural Revolution. The Red Guards categorized him as the enemy of the people simply due to his privileged family background. He was severely tortured and battered before sent to the countryside to be re-educated.
At the end of the Cultural Revolution he managed to flee to Hong Kong, and later to Singapore where he worked as manager at Singapore Hakka Clan Association on Club Street. But he was no more the starry eyed gullible young man who left Bangka for China that many years ago as a student wanted to contribute in building the New China and the new world. He now looked at humankind and saw mainly its fragilities, weaknesses and self-interest. His bitter experiences in China greatly disillusioned and damaged his ability to trust.
Nooly was soon head over hill in love with Tony. She admired him, put him on a pedestal, looked at him as the man who would make her life complete. On the other hand, although very much attracted to Nooly, Tony was not into long term commitment, he was not ready for domestic tranquillity. He had yet come to terms with himself.
The situation came to a crossroad when Nooly told him she wanted to marry William Foo. Now Tony had to make a decision. Would he face the problem head on, or would he choose to run away? Meanwhile he still had an internal demon to fight.
The story tried to portrait all the characters in the book as life like as possible. They all had flaws and far from perfect, just like what life is in reality. But they were all survivors in their own ways. In the meantime, some were still searching for the right path.
